Ramona Woman’s Club members and their guests bought new clothes to support the club’s scholarships and community grants.

Ten percent of the sales from the April 11 Luncheon & Fashion Show fundraiser will be set aside for future high school graduates and charitable causes. Ticket sales generated more than $1,500 and a raffle for prizes raised another $1,063, according to the Woman’s Club.

Clothes and jewelry being modeled by Woman’s Club members were provided by Glamour Girlz Boutique of El Cajon.

Boutique owner Peggy Harris said she knows how to select clothes being modeled on the runway and displayed on racks after being in business for 40 years. She also has 25 years of experience running fashion shows at 32nd Street Naval Station, Naval Air Station North Island and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

Ramona resident Linda Conley came to the fashion show looking for pastel-colored clothes and to check out the purses and jewelry. It was also a chance to visit with her friends who are club members, said Conley, who was a teacher in Ramona for 18 years, mostly at James Dukes Elementary School.

“I’ve been to the Fashion Show for several years,” Conley said while browsing through outfits on a rack. “It’s always wonderful and fun.”

Club member Sherie Macht said she attended to support the club and its biggest fundraiser of the year.

“I’m excited to enjoy the festivities and to see all the clothes,” Macht said. “I will probably buy some clothes or jewelry.”

Ramona resident Dolores Garcia was invited by Club Treasurer Carole Jewell.

“I’m excited to see what the show is about,” she said before the Mexican buffet lunch catered by Ramona High School students started. “I have to see what’s available before deciding what to buy. I’m picky, I like something easy and comfortable.”

Jean Scofield, a club member, said she likes all types of fashions, which makes it difficult to choose among the merchandise.

“There’s very few things I don’t like,” she said.

Club member Betty Hallman was eager to encourage people to buy clothes, which she said were reasonably priced.

Ramona resident Judy Walsh said she wanted to support the Ramona Woman’s Club because a handful of its members are also members of the Ramona Ramblers Travel Club, of which she is president.

“We need to support them because they’re supporting our club,” said Walsh, who helps organize monthly trips and excursions to local performances.

Along with raising money, the club also recruited several new members at the event, said Ramona Woman’s Club President Jill McKenzie.

“It gave people an opportunity to see what we’re doing,” McKenzie said. “All the money from the ticket sales and prize donations goes directly to scholarships and community nonprofits. The cost of the food today comes out of our General Fund so there was no cost for the Scholarship Fund.”
