35th Annual Ramona Rodeo results and highlights
Chillier than usual temperatures and forecasts of rain didn’t dampen spirits for the 35th annual Ramona Rodeo.
As it turned out, the rain stopped Friday afternoon, just in time for the rodeo’s evening events that included mutton bustin’ and a 35th birthday celebration. Wet weather stayed away on Saturday evening and on Sunday, allowing the cowboys and rodeo gals to kick up plenty of dust in the arena.
This year 270 contestants competed in the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association events of bareback riding, saddle bronc, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping and barrel racing.
Total payoff for the events was $62,391 with Ramona Outdoor Community Center Total contributing $4,000 to each event’s purse.
In addition to watching fan favorites such as Luke Branquinho, a four-tine world champion steer wrestler, and hometown cowboys Matt Deskovick, Fred Hight and Cameron Elston, spectators saw rodeo royalty parade into the arena with sponsor flags and help move cattle. Among them were Ramona Rodeo Queen Brittney Phillips and Miss Rodeo California Carollann Scott, along with visiting royalty from other communities.
Youngsters were also in the spotlight at the rodeo with eight junior barrel racers competing on Saturday night, eight children trying their hand at mutton bustin’, and young members of Ramona Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops carrying a large American flag into the arena for the “Star Spangled Banner” on Sunday.
Maddy Munson of Winchester, Calif. was the winner of the junior barrel race for the second consecutive year.
