Ramona Girls Softball Opening Day Ceremonies

Speaking at Ramona Girls Softball’s opening day this morning, county Supervisor Dianne Jacob told the ball players to do their best, “but the most important thing is to have fun.”

It was a hot, sunny morning at the softball fields at Fifth Street and Aqua Lane with players of all ages, as well as their parents, pumped up for the first day of games.

Jeff Moody, president of the Ramona Girls Softball (RGS), said there are 156 players participating this year, representing a 25 percent increase over last year.

“Of the 156, 87 are new players,” Moody said during the opening ceremonies.

Moody thanked volunteers, parents heading up different committees, and businesses sponsoring the different teams. The teams include 14U — the oldest age division and the first time in a couple of years the league has fielded 14U — and co-ed T-ball with ages ranging from 3-1/2 to 6.

League vice president Tony Llamas introduced last year’s all-star teams and presented medals.

Jacob said she used to coach softball and noted it teaches life skills. She talked about how the county has partnered with the Ramona softball association and invested just over $150,000 into the fields. The supervisor threw the first pitch.

Also speaking was Karen McGrath, North San Diego district commission of Amateur Softball Association.

McGrath, whose birthday was that day, told the players: “Be competitive on the field, but be friendly and have fun all the time.”
