Update: A female driver died and three others were injured in a two-vehicle collision at Vista Ramona Road and Woods Hill Lane near Old Julian Highway around 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Those injured were three occupants of a Ford F250 pickup truck. A 4-year-old boy suffered major trauma, reported officials, and was flown by Mercy Air. His father, a 50-year-old San Diego man, also had major injuries, and he, as well as a 5-year-old girl were transported by ground ambulance to Palomar Medical Center, said authorities.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Kattke, the female driver was the sole occupant of a Nissan Altima traveling westbound on Vista Ramona Road. The San Diego man was driving his truck eastbound and crossed over the double yellow lines, hitting the Nissan head-on, he said.

Witnesses said the engine of the Nissan caught fire and they threw dirt on it to try to extinguish the fire. A sheriff’s deputy who quickly arrived said he used a fire extinguisher.

Kattke said it was unknown if the two children in the truck were restrained, but the collision ejected the boy through the back window into the bed of the truck. The CHP officer said witnesses reported that the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed.
