Boys capture league track & field championship

The Valley League track and field championships were decided solely on the team results during league dual meets, and Ramona’s boys ended that phase of competition as the 2016 league champions.

The league meet at Valley Center High School determined the individual league champions for each event. Ramona senior Holly Stallman won three individual events and was also part of the winning girls 4x100 relay team. The Bulldogs also won the girls 4x400 relay, and boys championships were earned by Colin McNulty and Brandon Hankins.

“Some of the senior boys really came through to help us win the league,” said head coach Sherri Edwards.

One of those seniors was Parker Christopher, who gave Ramona first-place points in four individual events against Valley Center on May 13.

“That was pretty awesome,” Edwards said.

Ramona concluded dual meet competition May 5 at Oceanside and May 10 at home against Valley Center. Ramona’s girls defeated Oceanside, 75-61, while the Ramona boys took a 69-66 victory.

“It was touch and go the whole meet with the boys,” Edwards said.

The girls swept the three scoring positions against Oceanside in the 200-meter dash, the 400-meter run and the pole vault. Ramona’s boys obtained all 9 points in the 800 race.

Oceanside and Ramona each won eight girls events while the Ramona boys had first-place points in seven events, second-place points in nine contests, and the third-place point in seven competitions.

Ramona’s boys scored 75-1/2 points against Valley Center while the Jaguars had 60-1/2 points. The result gave Ramona a 4-0 record in league dual meets.

“We haven’t won the league in a while,” Edwards said.

Christopher won the 200 dash, the 400 dash, the long jump and the triple jump. Ramona senior Connor Anderson won the shot put and the discus.

The Ramona seniors who won individual events were Gabe Plendcio in the 3,200 race and Hankins in the pole vault. Januar Ranadhan, a sophomore, won the 100 dash. Ramona also won both boys relay races.

The Ramona girls lost to Valley Center by a 95-36 score and finished with a 2-2 league dual meet record, which was worth third place in the league standings. Valley Center’s girls finished with a 4-0 league record and Fallbrook was 3-1.

Stallman’s first-place marks at the league meet were 18’7” in the long jump, 12.25 seconds in the 100 dash, and 25.46 in the 200 dash. Stallman’s long jump distance broke her own school record of 18-4 1/4, which was set April 16 at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational meet.

Stallman was part of a second school record set at the league meet. Jenni Rivera, Tuesday Christopher, Hannah Farhat and Stallman won the 4x100 relay in 49.68, which eclipsed the previous school record of 49.89 set in 2005.

Christopher, Sierra Crenshaw, Rivera and Rayna Valade won the 4x400 relay in 4:08.58.

“That was exciting that we won both relays,” Edwards said.

Valade leaned out the Valley Center anchor. The Jaguars had a time of 4:08.63.

McNulty set a personal record of 1:58.43 in the 800 race to beat the second-place runner by a four-second margin. Hankins cleared 12-10 in the pole vault.

Parker Christopher was second in the long jump, third in the triple jump and third in the 400-meter race. Plendcio was second in the 1,600 and 3,200 events.

Anderson placed second in the discus and third in the shot put. Ranadhan was third in the 200 dash and fourth in the 100 dash.

Oscar Reyes had a discus throw that placed third. Caleb Berman was third in the 110-meter hurdles. Both of Ramona’s boys relay teams took third place.

Rivera was second in the girls 200 dash and third in the 100 dash. Ally Luna placed second in the 800 race.

Valade tied for second in the 400 run with Tuesday Christopher finishing fourth. Cora Tunnell finished third in the 3,200 run.

Peyton White placed third in the shot put. Emily Sojourner was fourth in the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Perla Cruz took fourth place in the 1,600 run.

The CIF section finals will be contested May 28 at Mount Carmel High School.
