“Live at the Lake,” an interactive outdoor music, food and wine festival to benefit Shelter to Soldier, will be held on the shores of Lake Henshaw at 26439 Highway 76 in Santa Ysabel on Sunday, Aug. 28, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Event hosts are Ramona Ranch Winery and Round Up Grill/John Little Catering. The festival will include a tribute to all active duty military and veterans, who will be admitted free. Food and beverages will be available for a fee.

Steelehorse Country will perform contemporary country tunes by George Strait, Alan Jackson and Toby Keith, Round Up Grill will provide barbecue and beer, and Ramona Ranch Winery craft wines will be available. Each ticket includes food and two beverages. Tickets are $30 in advance or $40 at the door. Advance tickets for those age 20 and younger are $15. Parking is free.

Shelter to Soldier is a nonprofit organization that adopts and trains shelter dogs to serve as psychiatric service dogs for post-9/11 combat veterans. Proceeds from a special CD release will benefit a scholarship fund at Warner Springs School in memory of Sadie Stockalper and her mother, Felice Howard-Vinnard, who lived in Warner Springs until they were killed last year by a former boyfriend of the younger woman, who worked at The Hideout Saloon in Santa Ysabel. The man then took his own life.

Service dogs will be at the family-friendly event, so those who attend are asked to leave their pets at home.

The Department of Veteran Affairs reports that, on average, 20 U.S. veterans and one active duty service member commit suicide — and every day about 3,200 dogs are euthanized. Studies estimate that one in every five military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffers from PTSD (post-traumatic stress syndrome). Shelter to Soldier connects veterans and service dogs for free, fulfilling the mission of the 501(c)(3) organization by “Saving Lives, Two at a Time.”
