Dana Hills Invitational readies runners for league cluster

The Dana Hills Invitational cross country meet on Saturday had a 3.0-mile course for all races, allowing Ramona head boys and girls coach Sherri Edwards to assign her harriers to the varsity and junior varsity races for Friday’s Valley League cluster meet at Kit Carson Park.

“It was nice that they all ran the same distance and I can kind of see where everybody’s at,” Edwards said.

Edwards had a limited squad at the Dana Hills meet. Some of her runners were recovering from injuries and some had work or soccer tournament schedule conflicts. Of the 20 Ramona boys and girls competing at the Dana Hills Invitational, 15 earned medals for finishing among the top 60 in their race.

“I was very pleased with how well they ran,” Edwards said.

Gabe Plendcio had a head cold during the week and wasn’t at full form Sept. 26, but he still finished second in the senior boys race with a time of 15:25, which was a 5-second personal record for the course.

A time of 15:56 gave Joey Jauregui fourth place in the senior boys race and a 14-second personal record. Two other Bulldog senior boys ran the course: Colin McNulty posted a time of 15:38 for 23rd place and Miguel Garza had a time of 23:09 for 125th place.

The junior girls race provided Ramona with another top 10 finish; Gwendalyn Gibson completed the race in 19:08 for seventh place. Marissa Talle finished 20th in that race at 20:21 and Tuesday Christopher was 82nd with a time of 24:23.

Mitchell Sutter placed 11th in the freshman boys race after completing the course in 17:15, Jack Clough was that race’s 20th finisher 17:59 after the starter’s gun was fired, and Billy Miller took 54th place with a time of 18:46.

Perla Cruz completed the senior girls race in 20:46 for 21st place, Robyn Turner was the 31st finisher and took 21:16, Lexie Hall had the 53rd-place time of 22:49, Brittany Davidson earned 54th place for her 22:50 performance, and Lora Schyns finished 62nd at 23:32.

In three races Ramona was represented by only one runner. Brandan Ruland was 26th in the sophomore boys race with a time of 17:08, Madison Huckey completed the sophomore girls race in 22:34 for 44th place, and Carmen Ocampo finished 45th in the freshman girls race and had a 23:03 performance.

Colton Meskell placed 76th in the junior boys race and took 18:01. Sean Duffy was the 162nd finisher 21:37 after that race commenced.
