Five Ramona High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets headed north to the Sea Scout Base in Long Beach with their Naval Science Instructor Chief Bob Richardson and participated in the first Navy Area 11 event of the 2015-16 school year.

Cadets Nicole Lewis, Alaina Sill, Kylie Pettit, Dylan Sanchez and Douglas Crawford were the lucky recent Sail Academy graduates who were able to participate in Hawthorn High School’s water–based “Poseidon Adventure.”

As the sole NJROTC program representing all of San Diego County, the cadets felt a heightened sense of pressure. It was quickly realized, however, that they were more than ready for the challenge when they were awarded overall first place for the event.

Alaina Sill, a junior who has been to many NJROTC events during her three years as a cadet, said that the Poseidon Adventure was “very fun, exciting and slightly weird.” While most meets are composed of events such as sit-ups, push-ups, and runs, the Poseidon was made up of 13 activities consisting of a canoe race around a buoy without oars, a variety of knot tying contests, and nautical and sail-based knowledge tests.

“It took teamwork and cooperation” said Cadet Dylan Sanchez.

Successful teamwork enabled the Ramona High School NJROTC Bulldog Company to take the gold.
