Ramona Design Review Board approved a new mural for town, viewed preliminary plans for a housing complex and voted in a new chair at its Sept. 24 meeting.

The board is also looking for candidates to fill a vacant position.

Rob Lewallen will take over as board chair, succeeding Greg Roberson, whose term has expired. Roberson, a longtime member of the board, is not seeking another term.

The design review board meets the last Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in Ramona Community Center. Candidates must live or have a business in Ramona, the ability to read building plans, and preferably have an understanding of the design or building industries. Terms are for three years. Interested candidates can attend the Oct. 29 meeting.

Last Thursday the board gave the nod to a mural design depicting artwork by the late hot rod/race car artist Bob McCoy of a midget car race. The outdoor mural is proposed for Ramona Automotive at 1936 Main St. in Old Town.

According to Judy Nachazel, vice president of Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project, a midget car track was formerly where the Ramona sheriff’s station is now, near Main Street and Montecito Road, and San Diego Raceway was by Ramona Airport.

Nachazel said no artist has been selected yet to paint the mural.

The board also viewed a preliminary site plan for a 15-unit single story housing complex for mentally compromised individuals for the north end of 12th Street next to the creek bed, said Roberson. As it was a preliminary plan, no action was required.
