Bowersox, Hogervorst reach second round of CIF

Share

Last year the only Ramona High School girls tennis players to participate in the CIF individual tournament were seniors.

This year two Ramona doubles teams played in the tournament at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

Elizabeth Bowersox and Renee Hogervorst reached the second round of the tournament before being eliminated in a tiebreaking game.

Tori Perfect and Betsy Dean lost in the first round, although those two juniors now have CIF tournament experience for the future.

Bowersox is a senior, and Hogervorst is a sophomore and will also likely leverage this year’s tournament experience in future competition.

“I think they played well in the big tournament,” said coach Rose Darrough.

The first two doubles rounds were played Nov. 12.

Dean and Perfect played a Patrick Henry tandem and lost the 6-0, 6-3 match.

“They did better in the second set,” Darrough said.

Bowersox and Hogervorst began the tournament with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over their Southwest High School counterparts.

“They had a decent draw,” Darrough said. “They also played well together.”

In the second round, Bowersox and Hogervorst faced High Tech High duo.

“They won the first set 6-3 and were playing really well,” Darrough said.

The High Tech players mounted a comeback and took a 6-1 triumph in the second set.

That forced a tiebreaking game to 10 points. Bowersox and Hogervorst trailed by a 5-1 margin before finally losing that game by a 10-6 score.

“I think they played well. The match could have gone either way,” Darrough said.

Ramona’s dual meet record for the season was 7-9, including a loss to Poway in the first round of the CIF team playoffs and a 5-3 Valley League performance which shared second place with Valley Center in the final league standings.

“I think overall it was a good season,” Darrough said. “I think the girls played well.”

The expected Valley League realignment will move Oceanside and Mission Vista, which does not have tennis, out of the Valley League and bring Escondido and San Pasqual into the Valley League.

“It’s going to be easier in terms of traveling,” Darrough said.

San Pasqual will likely be a tougher opponent than Oceanside, said Darrough.

“They’ll probably make the league a little more competitive,” Darrough said.
