San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob will be the keynote speaker at the Memorial Day service at Nuevo Memory Gardens cemetery on Monday.

The service, sponsored by Ramona VFW Post 3783, will begin at 10 a.m.

In preparation for the annual service, members of VFW Post 3783 put U.S. flags at the gravesites of all veterans at the cemetery, 532 Ash St. on Friday morning. Boy Scouts from Troop 768 placed buddy poppies on the veterans’ gravesites after school on Friday.

Also before the Memorial Day Service, veterans distributed buddy poppies for donations in front of Albertsons, Stater Bros., Kmart, Starbucks in Ramona and the Village Store in Country Estates Friday through Sunday. Proceeds will assist disabled and needy veterans, state and national veterans’ rehabilitation and service programs, and the VFW National Home for Children.

During the Memorial Day service at the cemetery, each veteran will be asked to stand and share the military branch in which he or she served and when, and Gold Star mothers or grandmothers will receive a bouquet of flowers. Gold Star parents are those who lost a son, daughter or grandchild in combat.

Following the service at the cemetery, there will be a short ceremony at the World War II memorial on Ninth Street near the ball field by the offices of Ramona Unified School District and then at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in front of Schwaesdall Winery on Highway 67.

At 1 p.m. VFW Post 3783 will host a community barbecue picnic for the public in its Bobby Watt Memorial Park, at 2247 Kelly Ave. The post will supply the meat. Those attending are invited to bring a side dish to share.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed the last Monday of May to remember those who died while serving in the military. It began as Decoration Day after the Civil War to show respect for those who died on both sides of that war. The name was later changed to commemorate all who died in military service.
