Boy Scouts’ annual banquet honors adults for service

Among highlights of this year’s Boy Scouts of America’s Pacific Crest District Annual Awards Banquet were remarks by a World War II veteran and recognition of Veteran Scouters who have contributed decades to the organization.

Attended by about 80 people in the Ramona Community Center, the banquet honored and recognized the accomplishments and work of adult volunteers in Scouting.

Jeff Young, Pacific Crest district director, awarded district Veteran Scouters for their long-time service:

•Robert Sulzen, 30 years

•Russ Christensen, 32 years

•Kurt Torsak, 35 years

•Chuck March, 40 years,

•Tim Buckles, 52 years

•Charles Teichert, 65 years

•Ed Hattrup, 80 years

Eagle Scout and 90-year-old Veteran Scouter Jim Roush, 90, was the guest speaker. Roush, a U.S. Army Air Corps bombardier assigned to a B-26 bomber over France, is the father-in-law of Russ Christensen, Pacific Crest District member at large.

Charlie Teichert Jr., Pacific Crest District member at large, presented the Pathfinder Awards that recognize a new adult leader in each unit who has made key contributions. The awards went to:

•Orlando Martinez, Pack 630;

•Ken Bradley, Pack 635;

•Debbie Thomas, Pack 647;

•Selina Dudley, Pack 678;

•Sheri Noble, Pack 691;

•Tracey Stephens, Troop 130;

•Dennis Ottalagano, Troop 630;

•Stephen Worthen, Troop 635;

•Glenn Jones, Troop 647;

•Brenda McGuinness, Troop 679;

•Lay Lay, Troop 690;

•James Radke, Troop 768;

•Todd Johnson, Varsity Team 635; and

•Jason Sepos, Crew 635.

The Red-tail Hawk Award is presented by each unit to an adult leader who has made significant contributions to the unit program and support throughout the year. Tim Buckles, Pacific Crest District commissioner, presented those awards to:

•Debbie Worthen, Pack 630;

•Joe and Kelly Siracusa, Pack 635;

•Kaarin Heap, Pack 647;

•Mark Gobin, Pack 678;

•Jonathan Burchmore, Pack 691;

•Joe Tretera, Troop 130;

•Angelica Anguiano, Troop 630;

•Kory Klein, Troop 647;

•Lewis Miller Robison, Troop 679;

•Doug Crawford, Troop 768;

•John Sommers, Varsity Team 635; and

•Tim Gold, Crew 635.

Christensen presented the District Award of Merit to Amanda Zavalov and to Crystal Leon. The award recognizes outstanding service to youth through Scouting as an active Scouter.

Also participating in the ceremony were Troop 630 with presentation and retirement of Colors, and Monroe McBride of Crew 635, delivering the invocation.

Attendees enjoyed a potluck dinner, a recap of the district’s year by Chisholm, and some Boy Scout trivia.
