Calling the death of a 4-year-old Ramona boy who drowned in a pool Saturday “a truly tragic accident,” Lt. John Maryon said the sheriff’s department will not be seeking any criminal charges.

The boy apparently wandered into a neighbor’s backyard in the 16000 block of Swartz Canyon Road on March 21 and somehow got into the pool, according to the sheriff’s report.

Around 3:30 p.m., the homeowner found the child when she heard her dogs barking. She called 911 and received instructions from the dispatcher on how to perform CPR.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the boy when they arrived, and he was taken by air ambulance to Rady Children’s Hospital. Despite the efforts of the homeowner and emergency personnel, the child died, reported Maryon.

According to the lieutenant, the house had two fences surrounding the property and the pool.

“At this point it is unclear how the child got through the fences,” Maryon said.
