Fireworks fundraising kicks into high gear

With less than two weeks to go until Independence Day, Rotarians are shifting into high gear to meet their $30,000 goal to stage this year’s July 4 Family Picnic and Fireworks.

Club members will be in front of Albertsons, Stater Bros. and Kmart accepting donations on Saturday.

Craig Jung, Ramona Rotary president and event chair, said that $23,646 had been received by Monday. In addition to the Saturday collection, donations may be mailed to Ramona Rotary Club, P.O. Box 276, Ramona, CA 92065 with checks payable to Ramona Rotary Foundation, noting it’s for the fireworks.

This is the 22nd year Ramona Rotary will sponsor the community fireworks. Scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. behind Olive Peirce Middle School at 1521 Hanson Lane on July 4, the event features games, contests, food, information booths, music and, starting at 9 p.m., fireworks accompanied by patriotic music broadcast over KYXY 96.5FM radio.

Residents and visitors may bring radios for use when the fireworks begin. No alcohol, smoking or pets are allowed on school grounds. Blankets, chairs, umbrellas, non-alcoholic drinks and picnics are welcome.

Among top donors to this year’s fireworks are the Norris Hinkle Family, who again contributed $2,000; BJ Koch, who paid the $1,213.76 insurance fee; and Ramona Chamber of Commerce, Ramona Disposal and Ramona Kiwanis, who each donated $1,000.
