Seven Bulldogs named to girls lacrosse all-league teams

Seven members of Ramona High School’s girls lacrosse team were selected as all-league players by the Valley League coaches.

“It showed that we pretty much dominated the league,” said assistant coach Al Cavell. “I was really proud of the girls.”

From Ramona, the Valley League first team included Ashley Wright, Megan Vandervort, Emily Kramer and Danielle Vizcarra.

“All four of them pretty much carried the team,” Cavell said. “They definitely deserved it. That goes for the girls on the second team as well.”

Rachel Costan, Maddy Peila and Katie Scroggins received berths on the all-league second team.

“We didn’t even have to settle for honorable mention, which was nice,” Cavell said.

In 2013, when Wright was a sophomore, she became the first Ramona player ever to earn first-team all-league honors in lacrosse. The 2015 selection to the first team was the third for Wright.

“It just kind of speaks to what an outstanding player she is,” Cavell said. “She’s good on both sides. She helps us on the offensive end, helps us on the defensive end.”

Wright, a senior, was the Bulldogs’ center. Her 127 goals during the 2015 season led the CIF San Diego Section, and no other player in the nation with publicly-released statistics scored as many goals. Wright also had 31 assists and 132 ground balls to place among the top five in the San Diego Section in those categories.

Vandervort, a junior, is a defender.

“Megan is pretty much the leader of our defense,” Cavell said. “She just takes the ball back any way she happens to.”

Kramer and Vizcarra are wings.

“Emily is a leader on the field. She is often the other go-to scorer,” Cavell said.

Kramer and Wright were Ramona’s captains this year. Kramer is a senior, as is Vizcarra.

“Danielle was actually a pleasant surprise for us,” Cavell said.

Vizcarra was on the 2013 lacrosse team but did not play last year.

“She would have ways to get by people,” Cavell said. “People had a really hard time defending against her.”

Costan, Peila and Scroggins are seniors. Costan played attacker while Peila and Scroggins were defenders.

Ramona won its first league championship in 2015, finishing with a 9-1 Valley League record. The Bulldogs reached the CIF Division II finals before an 8-7 overtime loss to Pacific Ridge in the championship game which ended a 13-game winning streak which was the longest in Ramona lacrosse history. The Bulldogs’ 18-5 overall record includes two CIF playoff wins as well as the loss in Ramona’s first title game appearance, and the 18 wins doubled Ramona’s previous team record of nine set last year.

“We’re just excited for next year,” Cavell said. “We’re hoping to go back to the finals again.”
