Kohill wines win big at 2015 Orange County Wine Society Commercial Wine Competition

Kohill Vineyard and Winery, a boutique winery owned by Mike and Aurora Kopp, brought home a chairman’s award and four medals from the 39th Annual Orange County Wine Society Commercial Wine Competition, considered the largest and most comprehensive judging of California wines in the world.

This year, 2,427 wines were judged by 73 professional winemakers and/or winery principals. The competition was conducted double blind, so that neither the judges nor the stewards knew the identity of wines being evaluated.

Kohill Winery’s 2012 Estate Refosco received a gold medal, along with the Chairman’s Award, which was presented to only 1 percent of the entries. Kohill’s 2014 Estate Rosé of Refosco and 2012 Cabernet Franc also won golds. In addition, a bronze medal went to Kohill Winery’s 2012 Syrah.

The award-winning wines are featured at the Orange County Fair until Aug. 16 in the Orange County Wine Society wine pavilion. They also may be tasted at Kohill Vineyard and Winery at 17211 Highlander Drive — poured by the winemaker, Mike Kopp.

“Kohill Winery is thrilled to bring back to San Diego the prestigious chairman’s award and four medals from the Orange County Wine Society’s 39th Annual Competition,” said Kopp.

Estate wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Barbera, Refosco, Sauvignon Blanc, and Semillon, and the tasting room also offers locally grown varietals.

“Our intimate tasting room hosts a collection of wines to be enjoyed at our charming wine bar or outdoor patio overlooking Ramona’s Valley of the Sun,” noted Kopp.
