Three people were killed on area roadways Sunday — one on state Route 78 just west of Rancho Trails and two on Wildcat Canyon Road north of Blue Sky Ranch, California Highway Patrol reported.

Route 78 traffic was diverted to Old Julian Highway while emergency crews responded to the fatality that occurred about 11:30 a.m., according to the CHP website.

In the Wildcat Canyon Road collision, two people were killed in a two-vehicle head-on about 5 a.m.

One of the cars was northbound and crossed into the southbound lane when the accident happened.

The wrong-way-driver and a passenger were killed. The other passenger had moderate injuries.

Authorities shut down both sides of Wildcat Canyon Road for four hours as they investigated.

Pictures of the scene show a car over the guardrail and another one overturned.

The driver of the other vehicle and a passenger in it were injured with severe injuries.

The injured were taken to a local hospital, the CHP said.
