County to assist with disposal of storm debris

Share

Update: The county is placing dumpsters at three locations in Ramona for the free disposal of flood-related debris.

Acceptable flood debris will include all types of non-hazardous construction, demolition, and household materials including drywall, carpet, and furniture, as well as loose soil, rocks, silt, and mud.

Two dumpsters will be available at each of the central disposal locations for separation of non-hazardous household debris and loose soil, rocks, silt and mud.

The locations are:

Downtown Ramona – Olive Street, just east of the Maple Street intersection. The dumpsters were placed Thursday night.

Two sites in Country Estates were scheduled to have dumpsters positioned early Friday morning. The sites are at the dead end of Gunn Stage Road and at the end of San Vicente Road, just past Barona Mesa Road.

Hours of Operation:

Every day, including weekends, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The county anticipates that the dumpsters will stay in operation through August 23. At the end of that time county will re-valuate and extend if there is still recovery ongoing.

Due to the excessive weight of soil debris, the county’s debris removal service provider will periodically cycle through the impacted areas to collect mud, silt and rocks in front of residential properties requiring assistance with removal. The schedule for collection is yet to be determined. Initially, based on need, it is expected to be twice per week. Anyone who has place mud/silt in front of their property is asked to notify project manager Michael Khoury at 858-694-3097.

Dumpsters are not certified to accept household hazardous waste (HHW), large or small appliances or electronics. HHW includes but is not limited to the following: small household appliances, solvents, paints, automotive lubricants, etc. HHW items can be disposed of at the County of San Diego Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 324 Maple Street in Ramona. The HHW facility is open bi- weekly on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Aug. 1, 15, 29 and Sept. 12 and 26. If containers are damaged, residents are asked to repackage into

secondary leak-proof containers such as plastic buckets or totes prior to transporting. Walk-ins will be accepted during the months of August and September. For more information, call 877-713-2784.

For additional information on how or where to recycle or properly dispose of unwanted items, call the county’s toll-free hotline at 877- 713-2784 or visit the County of San Diego’s Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste website: www.wastefreesd.org For information regarding the Flood Debris Disposal Service, contact, Michael Khoury, project manager with the county’s Department of Public Works at 858-694-3097 or michael.khoury@sdcounty.ca.gov.

Original story: The county is coordinating efforts to help flood victims dispose of storm debris, along with dirt and rocks that accumulated on their properties, at no charge.

Large bins will be placed in downtown Ramona and in San Diego Country Estates to collect storm debris, such as drywall and insulation. A bin will be placed at the east end of Gunn State Road, immediately adjacent to Swartz Canyon Road in the Estates. Other locations are being determined. The county said it hopes to have the bins available today.

Flood victims who had large amounts of dirt and rocks can place such materials at the edge of their properties and the county will pick it up, said a county official.
