Girls soccer works on getting ball into net

Share

The first two Valley League games of the 2014-15 season for Ramona High School’s girls soccer team extended the Bulldogs’ losing streak to six matches and Ramona’s scoreless streak to three games, but coach Deena Vizcarra said that the Bulldogs have created opportunities.

“We’ve been dominating in getting the ball up there,” Vizcarra said. “Our ratio to actually make the shot has been low.”

The Bulldogs, who have a Valley League match at Fallbrook on Friday, lost a 7-0 non-league match Jan. 15 at Torrey Pines before opening league competition with 2-0 home defeats Jan. 20 against Mission Vista and Jan. 22 against Oceanside.

“We’re trying to find something to make this work,” Vizcarra said.

Torrey Pines held a 2-0 halftime lead.

“The first half we did so well against them,” Vizcarra said.

A second-half emphasis on offense at the expense of defense led to the Falcons’ scoring onslaught.

“They just ran us over the second half,” Vizcarra said.

Although she allowed seven goals, Ramona goalie Taylor Stacy made 10 saves against the Falcons. The Bulldogs took 12 shots.

“We had the opportunities,” Vizcarra said.

Eight Bulldogs tested the Torrey Pines goalkeeper. Kathrin Hoertig took three shots, and Jenni Rivera and Danielle Vizcarra had two shots apiece. Ramona players with one shot were Kaley Glotfelty, Sydney Schmidt, Karli Njaa, Courtney Dolan, and Alexis Dinero.

Ramona took 31 shots against Mission Vista.

“Mission Vista’s game on Tuesday clearly should have been our win,” Vizcarra said.

The Timberwolves scored once in each half.

“We’re doing a really good job of getting the ball down to the front,” Vizcarra said. “We’re getting the shots. We’re just not getting the finish.”

Oceanside also scored once in each half.

“That was actually pretty even,” Vizcarra said of the game.

The game against Oceanside saw eight Ramona players account for 12 shots, albeit unsuccessfully. The loss gave Ramona a season record of 3-11-1 including the 0-2 Valley League mark.

“We are resilient and we’ll take our next opportunity,” Vizcarra said. “Our win will come. We’re going to work hard.”
