Repairing appliances with customer focus

For Ron Hughes, repairing appliances is not just about fixing those important devices in the home; it’s about going that extra mile for the customer.

“I have a responsibility to do my very best,” said the owner of Mr. Ron’s Appliance Repair in Ramona.

To make life a little easier for customers, Hughes works with them to find a service call time that is convenient with their schedules.

“For a lot of people, it’s a huge ordeal,” he said.

Once the appliance is repaired, as a courtesy he will educate the customer on ways to avoid future breakdowns, such as cleaning the coils in a refrigerator. He will also give advice about other appliances — “basically empower the customer,” he said.

Understanding that some may have tight budgets, Hughes offers discounts to single parents, military and senior citizens.

“We try to keep our costs down for them,” he said.

Hughes started his appliance repair business in Ramona in 2000, after working for Solar Turbines in San Diego.

“I’ve just always been mechanical,” he said.

Fixing appliances is more than just that, he explained. It also involves customer service, conflicts and resolving issues.

“I just found I was well-suited,” he said of his career choice.

Operating the business with him is his wife, Michele, who, among several hats, serves as office manager. Married for 21 years with two daughters, the husband and wife are both Ramona High School graduates — Ron graduated in 1988 and Michele (Anderson) in 1991.

“She’s excellent with our customers,” Hughes said. “She really goes above and beyond.”

While calls for appliance repairs typically peak in the summer and drop off after Thanksgiving, Hughes said he stays busy year-round.

Among the appliances he repairs are water heaters, washers, dryers, refrigerators, microwaves, stoves, dishwashers, compactors, disposals and cooktops. Hughes services all brands, from low-end to high-end, including Kenmore, Whirlpool, Bosch, Thermador and Viking. He takes factory courses to keep up with industry standards and technology.

“Everything’s getting more complicated with computers,” he said.

While servicing an appliance, Hughes said he will check everything out. If he sees other issues and believes the customer will be better off purchasing a new appliance, he will say so.

Hughes said he wants his customers to be confident there is no risk when they call and he will do everything to ensure the best possible service. That includes a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

In addition to treating customers with respect, Hughes and his wife also believe in giving back to the community.

“It is our goal not just to earn a living in this world but to give in return, leaving a legacy for those who are not as fortunate,” states the company’s website.

Among organizations they support are Warrior Foundation Freedom Station, Ramona Pregnancy Care Clinic and Young Life, a Christian-based group for high school-aged youth.

“We feel strongly about supporting the community,” said Hughes.

The couple volunteers their time for Young Life and holds the club’s meetings in their home on Monday nights.
