Supervisors approve renaming Ramona Boys and Girls Club to honor Conrad Prebys

San Diego County supervisors cleared the way Wednesday for the home of the Ramona Branch of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater San Diego to be renamed in honor of philanthropist Conrad Prebys, who recently donated $1 million to the nonprofit.

Boys and Girls Club President Danny Sherlock was present at the supervisors’ to express support for renaming the clubhouse at Collier Park as the Conrad Prebys Ramona Branch-Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego.

The $1 million boost will go toward expanding the clubhouse and subsidizing the club’s after-school program at Collier Park.

Supervisor Dianne Jacob said the programs at the Boys & Girls Club fit with the county’s “Live Well San Diego” initiative.

“I know the community of Ramona — particularly the kids of Ramona — are very grateful,’’ Jacob said.

Renaming the Ramona clubhouse falls under the naming rights program through the county’s Parks and Recreation Department. The program authorizes the Parks and Recreation Department to grant naming rights at local parks as a way to generate money for the department.

Chairman Bill Horn said he doesn’t normally support naming buildings after people, but was willing to make an exception for the Boys & Girls Club because of the work it does with children.
