UPDATE: April 25, 8:55 p.m.—A 57-year-old man died today at Palomar Medical Center as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reports.

A sheriff’s report released just after 8 tonight states that Ramona deputies responded to a radio call of a male trespassing at a resident in the 600 block of D Street about 1:42 p.m. today. When they arrived, the deputies contacted the man, who appeared agitated, so for their safety they attempted to check him for weapons.

As the deputies began to check him for weapons, the man pulled away from them and shot himself in the head with a gun he pulled from his waistband, sheriff’s Lt. John Maryon reported.

The man was taken by air ambulance to a hospital, where he later died, said Maryon.

None of the deputies discharged their firearms, the sheriff’s report stated.

No additional information is available at this time, said Maryon.

ORIGINAL REPORT: A Ramona man was airlifted to Palomar Medical Center Trauma Center after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the 600 block of D Street this afternoon, officials reported.

The man’s name was not released. Sheriff’s officials are investigating the incident and specifics may be released later today, said sheriff’s Lt. Jim Bolwerk.

The incident occurred while sheriff’s deputies were contacting the man about 1:30 p.m., said Bolwerk, who added that he believes the man was recently evicted.

Cal Fire Capt. John Sena with Ramona Fire Department Station 80 said paramedics treated the shooting victim, who was alive when he was airlifted to the trauma center.

Pastor Mark Baker with the Light of the Lamb ministry on Seventh St. went to the scene as paramedics were putting the man into the ambulance and said it appeared he was conscious.

The victim is a veteran with health problems, but he recently was getting help from the Veterans Administration, said Baker.

“He’s a very private individual,” said Baker. “...I know that he had been going through an eviction process.”

Sheriff’s deputies at the scene were upset, said Baker.

“I could see it in their eyes,” he said.

Baker and his wife Christie ask the community to pray for the victim.

“We have to keep praying that he will be all right,” said Baker. “He’s a good man. He’s a good man.”
