Fallbrook gives Bulldog golfers tough competition

Share

Losing by just one stroke, 203-204, Ramona High’s boys golf team had its first league loss April 14, when it faced Fallbrook. Both teams were undefeated in league.

“We knew going into this match that Fallbrook was going to be tough to beat, and unfortunately it proved to be true,” said coach Michael Gainey. “We will be hosting Fallbrook at home for our last match of the season and I’m pretty sure that the Valley League title will be on the line.”

The matchup against Fallbrook is scheduled for April 30.

Bulldog Justin Graf was once again the medalist, shooting a one-under-par 35 at Pala Mesa Resort.

Thomas Andrews shot a 39, while Cameron Marshall and Jacob Buckley each posted 41. Serop Matoain’s 48 was the next lowest score of the six players. The top five scores are counted for the team total.

The match was followed by a non-league loss against Steele Canyon the next day at the Bulldog’s home course, San Vicente Resort. Ramona posted a 231 to Steele Canyon’s 209. To give more of his golfers a chance to compete, Gainey said the top six did not play in the match.

The Bulldog team bounced back to post a league win against Oceanside on April 16 at Oceanside Municipal Golf Course. Graf was the medalist with a 36 in the 214-243 Ramona win.

Andrews shot a 42, Ben Stein and Doug Crawford each posted 44, and Mataoin and Buckley each carded 48.

Gainey said the win was good for the team’s moral.

“At this point in the season, it’s time for every varsity player to find some magic in their game because we’ll need it in these last couple of weeks left in the season,” said Gainey.

The golfers are scheduled to compete in two league matches next week: against Mission Vista at Marine Memorial Golf Course on April 21, and against Orange Glen at Eagle Crest Golf Club on April 23.
