What feeds the mind also feeds the body

I usually dedicate this column to how you can improve your physical fitness and well-being through fitness, nutrition, supplementation, mobility and hard work. I would be kidding you and myself if I didn’t include how to be better through what you feed your mind.

We feed our minds through many avenues. From the shows we watch and the books we read to the people we associate with and the attitudes that we have, we decide how we mold our minds and in turn the physical as well as mental fitness we achieve.

Let’s begin with keeping our minds right by limiting the amount, and type, of media we let enter our eyes and therefore our minds and attitudes. Please don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying be naive and blind to the happenings of the world, but don’t feed solely on the negatives and filth of the day.

Let’s face the facts. Today’s news channels cover all that is heinous, horrific and terrible in the world. News outlets cover this because it’s what society feeds off. Imagine if the news channels had a fair and balanced mix of good news and bad news. If I was producing it, I’d give the bad news first and end on a positive note with all the feel good stories.

You mustn’t turn off the news all together, but don’t be sucked in to all the despicable stories and headlines that come across your Facebook feeds or television channels.

Media also includes the books we read. Let’s be honest. Do we really need to read romance novels where men and women alike give into their lustful passions and have adulterous relationships? Uhh, probably not.

You may call me old-fashioned, but one must protect the mind to nourish the body and spirit. As the ancient scripture goes, “All things are permissible, but not all things are beneficial.” Sometimes, you have to remove stumbling blocks to press forward in life and get back to square one.

I love the saying, “ You can’t soar with eagles when you hang out with turkeys.” This couldn’t be more true when it comes to our personal associations. I don’t suggest disowning any friends who don’t share your vision in life and in fitness. What I do suggest is limiting your exposure to those who can bring you down.

Do your part in trying to build others up, but when those energy vampires get the best of you, it’s time to break out the garlic and get them on the run. Be a good friend to those around you, but relationships are a two-way street where both parties must benefit.
