Students share sweet treats, school supplies during Great Kindness Challenge

Olive Peirce Middle School’s participation in the Great Kindness Challenge earned the school a framed certificate at a regional event held at The New Children’s Museum in downtown San Diego.

On behalf of the school, two OPMS seventh-graders — Hope Garmon-Sooley and Ashley Dominguez — accepted the award from Raoul Martinez, morning anchor for television’s Fox 5 San Diego.

Student leaders presented the challenge to OPMS students on the school’s daily broadcast. Included in the challenge was a list of 50 kind acts.

During Great Kindness Challenge week, “classes teamed up with each other to perform kind acts either for each other or the school as a whole,” said Michele Mauney, school counselor.

Sweet treats, notes to students and school supplies to their kindness partners were among kind acts.

“The students were actively engaged throughout the week,” noted Mauney.

Martinez was emcee at the regional event, which aired on one of his morning broadcasts.

Students in kindergarten through high school from many schools in the county participated in the weeklong challenge, reported Mauney.
