Ramona High School boys soccer coach Michael Jordan knew that the Bulldogs’ last-place finish in the Valley League standings would limit Ramona representation on the all-league team.

The selection process during the Feb. 24 Valley League coaches meeting placed Ramona’s Colin Uekert on the league’s first team while granting honorable mention status to Jesse Bonilla, Brandon Duarte, Aeden Maruna and David Soto.

“I think that our team warranted more points than that, but that’s how they figured it out,” Jordan said.

Ramona’s Valley League record of 0-6-4 placed Ramona last among the league’s six teams. The Bulldogs had an overall season record of 5-11-8. The league’s coaches utilized a points formula based on league finish to determine the number of first-team and second-team selections for each school.

Uekert still received enough support from the league’s coaches to earn a first-team berth.

“He did a lot for us,” Jordan said.

Uekert, a junior, played center midfield during the 2013-14 season. Jordan noted that Uekert could control the tempo of the game as well as play well defensively.

Duarte, a senior forward; Maruna, a junior midfielder; Soto, a senior defender; and Bonilla, a senior goalie, gave the Bulldogs an honorable mention selection at each position range.

“I guess that makes sense because we were pretty well-balanced as far as contributions on the field,” said Jordan.
