Boys tennis starts season with two victories

The Bulldog tennis team opened the season with a 15-3 victory over Sage Creek High School at Riviera Oaks Resort and Racquet Club and then went on the road to beat Mission Hills High School 14-4.

Coach Rose Darrough was pleased with the team’s effort and had praise for the No. 1 doubles team.

“Seneca Utech and Chad Martin played well and won all three sets (6-1, 6-0 and 6-1),” she said. “No. 1 singles player Christian Failla also played well and won all three sets (6-4, 6-1 and 6-0). Our No. 3 doubles team, Joey Guzzina and Albert Austin, also won all three sets (6-3, 6-1, 6-0).”

Adam Mazzola posted scores of 5-7, 6-3 and 6-1 from his spot as the No. 2 singles player. Grant Wilcox also won 2 team points with scores of 1-6, 6-2 and 6-0. The doubles team of James Jarak and Andrew Giordino posted scores of 3-6, 6-1 and 6-1.

In singles action at Mission Hills, Failla swept his opponents with scores of 6-1, 7-5 and 6-2. Mazzola picked up two sets with scores of 4-6, 7-5 and 6-0. Garrett Wilcox also picked up 2 team points with scores of 7-5, 6-2 and 4-6.

The doubles teams won seven of nine sets against the Grizzlies. Utech and Martin won three sets with scores of 6-3, 6-1 and 6-0. Jarak and Giordino played some tough sets and came through in the clutch with scores of 7-6, 7-5 and 6-0. Guzzina and Austin went 3-6, 5-7 and 6-0.

“We are off to a good start. We play a very demanding pre-league schedule that should get us ready for league play. We will continue to work and strive to improve,” said Darrough.
