A kayaker who died at Lake Sutherland Saturday was identified Monday as a 57-year-old Ramona man.

San Diego Lifeguard divers recovered Leonard Kevin Jones’ body from the lake on Sunday morning, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

A city worker noticed an upside down kayak at Lake Sutherland Dam just after 1:30 p.m. Saturday, San Diego County sheriff’s Lt. Christine Robbins said. A cooler and a hat also were found.

The city worker told authorities the man, who frequently fished at the lake, had a heart condition, another sheriff’s official said. Fishing season at Lake Sutherland opened on Saturday, and Jones went to the lake to fish, reported the medical examiner’s office.

Robbins said deputies checked the shoreline and asked for a helicopter to help in the search. A search-and-rescue team was unable to find Jones before dark, and the search was resumed about 7 a.m. Sunday.

Jones was declared dead at 9:36 a.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy was

pending.

Lake Sutherland, owned by the city, is east of Ramona off state Route 78 and Sutherland Dam Road.
