She taught computer classes geared toward facilitating communication with loved ones far away. Her series of four lessons — which she presented eight times over two summers — covered computer basics, email, Facebook and online security.

She also offered one-on-one classes for those with little cyber experience.

The Cathedral Catholic High School junior belongs to Girl Scout Troop 2208. She is the daughter of the Honorable Maria Arroyo (retired Juvenile Court judge) and Stanley Prokop. Her two older sisters, Tiffany Lynch and Taylor Arroyo-Tabin, received the Gold Award in previous years.

Kalani is one of 44 Girl Scouts in the San Diego region who earned the Gold Award this year. Just 5 percent of Girl Scouts nationwide achieve this level of recognition.

The tradition of the highest leadership awards for Girl Scouts has included The Golden Eaglet of Merit (1916-19), The Golden Eagle (1919-38), First Class (1938-82) and The Curved Bar (1940-80). In 1980, the name became the Girl Scout Gold Award.

Through the years, approximately 1 million Girl Scouts have earned one of these service awards.

Founded in 1912, Girl Scouting provides leadership experience for girls. Through Girl Scouts, girls discover themselves, connect with others and take action to make the world a better place.
