With significant rain headed to the region, San Diego County is offering free sand and bags to residents in the unincorporated areas.

•In Ramona, sand and bags are available at Fire Station 82, 3410 Dye Road. Residents will need to bring a shovel to fill their bags.

•In Julian, sand and bags are available at Cal Fire Station 50, 1587 Highway 78. Bring a shovel.

County Department of Public Works (DPW) crews will be working on county roadways during and after the storms and advises drivers to watch out for crews and slow down.

If driving in the mountains, wait for the storms to pass before going up to enjoy the snow, DPW said, as crews will likely be plowing roadways around the clock. Don’t park on the highway and don’t sled down a hill and across the roadway as a snowplow could come around a curve, cautioned DPW staff. The county also recommended carrying chains if planning a trip to the mountains. Never cross a flooded roadway if you cannot see the pavement, said the county, as even a few inches of water running at the right velocity can sweep a car, and even a truck, and its occupants off the roadway and downstream.

Road conditions and updates will be posted on the DPW social media pages:
