Like diamonds forming under pressure, the Ramona High School boys basketball team is being molded not on the practice court but rather in the stress of a game situation. Also, like diamonds, they are shining.
Their rigorous schedule found them playing every night in a five-day span, traveling from Vista to Clairemont to Ramona to Mt. Miguel to Ramona — all while trying to prepare for finals.
“Yes, I feel that we are growing every game that we play,” said head coach Zack Cole. “We had a handful of players come out late because our fall sports did so well. Playing five games in five days forces the boys to apply what we have taught them quickly. There is no time to practice with that many games to play consecutively. Every possession becomes a teaching experience and we are trying to do just that as a coaching staff.”
Winning close games helps build character, said Cole, “and we have been able to do that against some opponents with high basketball IQs. I feel the boys are giving us their best and as the season continues, we will to continue to grow as a team.”
This is a young team making young mistakes, continued Cole.
“That will improve as the season continues,” he said. “We are really emphasizing playing as a team, acting like a team and caring about the team. Anything less than that from our players and coaches is unacceptable. I am excited to see us grow as a team as the season continues. The boys are working extremely hard and Ramona should be proud of them. Come out and support them. I know the boys would really enjoy that.”
After their brutal week, the boys win/loss record is a competitive 4-2. They have wins against Mar Vista (62-47), Clairemont (65-33), Mt. Miguel (67-60) and La Jolla Country Day (62-60) with losses against Vista (54-55) and Valhalla (64-73).
Through six games, Marco Cobian leads the team in points with 47, followed closely by shooter Blake Seitz, who has 45 points and has made 12 of 25 3-pointers. Davis Windes has 16 points, has a 66 percent free throw average and is averaging 7.33 rebounds per game.
Calvin Harris has 20 points and 16 rebounds. Jake Newman averages 7.3 points per game and has a 62 percent free throw average. Logan Knudsen can be counted on for an average of 7.5 points per game and four rebounds. Anthony Silvaggio averages nearly 9 points per game and has 19 rebounds on the season.
The Bulldogs host Crawford at home on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m. and do not play at home again until Jan. 6.
