Head coach Ken Scheib is looking to build on last year’s 10-0 Valley League Championship season (23-7 overall) and did just that as his girls’ varsity basketball team beat the visiting Del Norte Nighthawks 53-41 in their first game of the 2014-15 season Monday.

The Lady Bulldogs varsity squad returns seven players: Katherine Mauldin, Kylee Scheib, Chiara Mattern, Lauren Werhanowicz, Hannah Farhat, Molly McLeod and Emily Sojourner. Last year’s junior varsity standouts — Leah Green, Maddie Funk, McKenzie Griffin, and Jordan Stites — round out the team.

The two teams picked up where they left off last season, as the score was a tight 12-10 at the end of the first period.

At halftime, the Bulldogs took a slim 23-19 lead into the locker room. As they returned to the court, they dominated the Nighthawks, allowing them only 2 points in the third period.

Ramona also won the battle of the rebounds (44-30) in the game.

Mauldin was 6 of 14 shooting on the night, scoring a total of 16 points. She was on court, without a break, for the entire four periods of play. She also led the team in rebounding with 15.

Scheib shot 5 for 21 with a total of 12 points. Mattern contributed 11 points, Farhat 7, Werhanowicz 4 and Maddie Funk 3.

The Lady Bulldogs take their 1-0 record to Vista today, Dec. 3, before returning home for games on Saturday, Dec. 6, vs. Bishops and Monday, Dec. 8, vs. West Hills. Saturday’s game will start at 11 a.m. Monday’s game will start at 7 p.m.
