Ramona Soccer League’s Intra Boys Under 14 team, coached by Marco Sanchez, not only reached its first tournament final last weekend at the Tournament of Champions in La Jolla, but came home with the championship trophy.

The team started strong Saturday morning, Aug. 9, with a 1-0 victory over the Breakers with Dustin Baker scoring the game’s only goal.

Dustin wasn’t finished scoring for the day. He added another goal in the team’s second game against Temecula United. Jimmy Cheney and PJ Scholl added goals to give Ramona a 3-1 win.

Sunday morning pitted the Ramona team against LA Galaxy South Bay. LA Galaxy got a break with a penalty kick that resulted in a goal and carried the team to a 2-1 win over Ramona. Emerson Fuentes put Ramona’s only goal into the net.

Despite the loss, Ramona qualified for the finals Sunday evening. Once again, Intra players faced LA Galaxy South Bay, giving them a chance to avenge their loss earlier in the day.

“After a long weekend, it was evident that the boys were worn out, but they were able to do just enough to get the win and go home with the championship as Aaron Castro put in the one and only goal of the game to give Ramona a 1-0 victory,” said Ramona Soccer League vice president David Williams. “The smiles on the boys’ faces were something to behold as they clutched their medals and trophy and posed for pictures. It’s going to be a great season for the Ramona Intra U14 boys.”
