At their next luncheon meeting, San Vicente Valley Club members will learn about dog agility, a sport in which the handler directs the dog through an obstacle course in a race for time and accuracy.

The meeting on Wednesday, April 30, is open to the public.

10.Valley Club.dogs.FEATURERamona resident Donna Murdoch will bring her Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, Blaze and Koty, who compete in dog agility, a fast-growing sport that demonstrates a dog’s willingness to work with handlers in a variety of situations. Blaze and her younger brother Koty will demonstrate the sport and Murdoch will show a video of recent competitions.

Calling dog agility an exciting and athletic event, Murdoch said it requires top conditioning, concentration, training and, most importantly, teamwork as the agile dogs negotiate a tricky obstacle course, including weaving through poles, bounding over jumps and balancing on boards. The ultimate goal is to complete the course accurately and fast.

Murdoch, Blaze and Koty compete several weekends a month in agility trials in California and have traveled to the AKC Agility Invitational and the AKC National Agility championships.

The breed, commonly called Tollers, is the smallest of the retrievers. Known for their high energy and playful personalities, they are used as water retrievers and they also retrieve upland birds.

In addition to their busy competition schedule, Blaze and Koty love to hike and hang out at Big Bear Lake retrieving, said Murdoch, noting, “Tollers are always up for the next adventure.

The meeting will be in the San Vicente Resort, 24157 San Vicente Road. The order of events for the day will be: check-in and social time 11 a.m., call to order 11:30, luncheon noon and program at 1 p.m.
