Brush fires burning in El Cajon area

Firefighters are battling a 40-acre blaze off Interstate 8 and Los Coches Road near Lakeside, reports Cal Fire. The spread has been slowed and threat to structures reduced, according to the state fire agency.

Update: 6:35 p.m.

—Due to three brush fires burning on hillsides off Interstate 8 near Greenfield Drive, Los Coches Road, and Dunbar Lane in El Cajon, California Highway Patrol has issued a sig alert with a minimum three-hour partial closure of the 8 on the eastbound side. Authorities are on the lookout for someone possibly setting fires.

Update: 6:20 p.m.

— CHP reports that traffic in the westbound lane of Interstate 8 is flowing smoothly but the eastbound No. 2 lane is closed around Greenfield Drive in El Cajon due to several brush fires. Five different fire spots were reported at 5:24 p.m. by Los Coches Road and eastbound I-8, with fires very close to houses south of the freeway. At 5:41 p.m. multiple fires from Los Coches to Dunbar were reported. Authorities are on the lookout for someone possibly setting fires.
