Thunderstorms knock out power in Borrego area

Share

Saturday, Sept. 7—Thunderstorms knocked out power in the Borrego Springs area and about 750 homes and businesses remained blacked out today, as forecasters called for another set of afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains and deserts.

The outage in Borrego Springs, Shelter Valley and Canebrake struck Friday afternoon and could extend through this evening, as crews worked to restore power, according to San Diego Gas & Electric.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for East County mountains and deserts, set to take effect at 11 a.m. and also extend into the evening. Monsoon moisture was expected to gradually decrease, but thunderstorms could still form, the NWS said.

“Conditions remain favorable for strong, slow moving thunderstorms to produce flash flooding and excessive runoff, especially over and downstream from recent wildfires,” according to the NWS.

Potentially damaging wind and hail could also be possible, meteorologists said.

Weather Service officials advised residents to monitor forecasts and prepare to take action in case a flash flood warning is issued.
