Wednesday, May 15—

Smoke may be visible in the East County today as firefighters conduct a controlled burn in Jamul, a battalion chief said.

The controlled burn is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. along Highway 94 near Rancho Jamul Drive, according to Cal Fire Battalion Chief Nick Schuler.

The purpose of the burn is to reduce the amount of brush in the area that could fuel a wildfire, he said, noting it also will serve as a training exercise for firefighters.
