Ramona High spikers beat Mira Mesa, lose to Escondido
By Joe NaimanRamona High School’s boys volleyball team defeated Mira Mesa in three games on the Marauders’ court March 12 before a March 14 home loss to Escondido.The match against Escondido also opened Valley League play for the Bulldogs, whose overall record fell to 7-2.The victory over Mira Mesa was by scores of 25-16, 25-12, and 25-21.
“We pulled it out there at the end and started playing a little bit better,” Klauda said.
During the third game Cody Kealy served for 6 straight points, including two aces. Kealy, who is Ramona’s opposite hitter, also had three kills during the third game.
Middle blocker Lance Stickney led the Bulldogs with nine kills for the match, doing so in 14 swings and without any hitting errors. Outside hitter Josh Spieker had eight kills. Kealy had a total of five kills during the match. Setter Isaiah Spieker had 31 assists against the Marauders.
The league match against Escondido was rescheduled from a later date due to Spring Break.
“I knew Escondido was going to be good based on how they did last year,” Klauda said.
“They’ve got two guys who are pretty big and they jump really well,” Klauda said.
The Cougars won the first game by a 26-24 overscore and prevailed by a 25-22 margin in game two. Ramona salvaged a 25-23 triumph in the third game before Escondido’s 25-16 victory in the fourth game sealed the match.
“I think it’s the best they’ve played so far this year,” Klauda said of his team. “Escondido just made a few plays when they needed to pull out the win.”
Josh Spieker led Ramona with 15 kills against the Cougars. Stickney added seven kills. Isaiah Spieker had 34 assists.
The Bulldogs host Westview Thursday, March 21, and will play in the La Jolla Tournament Friday and Saturday.
