County to consider reducing regulations for ag ventures

San Diego County Board of Supervisors will consider actions to reduce regulations for agricultural ventures and to encourage ag tourism at its June 26 meeting.

The agenda topic, “fostering the growth of microbreweries, cheese-making and other agricultural ventures,” notes that agriculture is the fifth leading industry in the county, accounting for $5.1 billion annually to the local economy.

“Despite these robust figures, local farming is facing a growing host of challenges which are threatening its viability,” the agenda states.

“Reducing regulations would allow property owners to do more with their land and would be an important step to promote farming and agricultural tourism,” the county continues, pointing out that the supervisors have taken similar steps to establish boutique wineries and is working to help out the equine industry.

Recommendations that the board will consider Wednesday will be to direct the chief administrative officer to look at reducing regulations for ag ventures, support H.R. 494, the Small BREW Act that would decrease taxes for small breweries, and to support legislative efforts to encourage ag tourism. The topic is listed as the seventh item on the board’s agenda.

The supervisors meet at 9 a.m. in Room 301 at the County Administration Center, 1600 Pacific Highway, San Diego. For more information, see www.sdcounty.ca.gov/cob/bosa/index.html.
