The Padres beat the Seattle Mariners 12-4 on Sunday at Peoria Stadium.

Batter’s box: Right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr.’s first hit of the spring was a high, long drive to left field off Mariners ace Luis Castillo in the third inning. Tatis (.650 OPS) was also hit by a pitch in his three plate appearances. … Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim (1.313) and catcher Luis Campusano (.707) also both hit their first homers. … Center fielder Jackson Merrill (.680) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. … Left fielder Tim Locastro (2.024) went 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. … Oscar Mercado (1.300) came off the bench and went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. He played right and center field. … Third baseman Tyler Wade (.683) went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI a walk, two runs scored and a steal.

Balls and strikes: Yu Darvish (3.38 ERA) left a slider up in the second inning — “Arizona,” he said in English with a laugh — and the flags were blowing out on Cade Marlow’s two-run homer to right. Darvish, however, struck out six over 3 1/3 innings, didn’t walk anyone and gave up four hits in pushing his pitch count to 46 (30 strikes) in his second Cactus League start. … Woo-Suk Go’s second appearance of the spring did not go so well. Go (4.50) struck out a batter and allowed a run on two hits and a walk. … Right-handers Enyel De Los Santos (9.92) and Steven Wilson (0.00) both struck out two in scoreless frames.

Extra bases: A.J. Preller, the Padres’ president of baseball operations, was seated in a golf cart behind the backstop for the “B” Game on Field 2 when he was approached by a young boy who asked him if he could bring back Blake Snell. Preller is good with kids: “Probably not,” he said with a sheepish smile. … It’s spring training for broadcasts, too, and Padres TV was apparently not quite back from commercial break when Darvish was set for the first pitch in Peoria Stadium when Mark Grant yelled down from the press box to the umpire crew to hold the start of the game for 30 seconds. They did, receiving a round of applause from the fans behind home plate.

On deck: Matt Waldron will start Monday’s game in Peoria against the Chicago Cubs. First pitch is at 12:10 p.m. (PST). Jordan Wicks will start for the Cubs.
