Saturday is free fishing day

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife invites anglers to celebrate summer by fishing for free on Saturday, July 6. The purchase of a sport fishing license will not be required that day.

Free fishing days provide a low-cost way to give fishing a try.

All fishing regulations, such as bag and size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirements, fishing hours and stream closures will remain in effect. Every angler must have an appropriate report card if fishing for steelhead or sturgeon anywhere in the state.

Fish and Wildlife offers two free fishing days each year — usually around the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekend — when it’s legal to fish without a sport fishing license. The other free fishing day will be Sept. 7.
