Film 101 –‘Cinema Greats’ 14: James StewartBorn in Indiana, Pennsylvania, on 20 May, 1908Birth Name: James Maitland Stewart Ht. 6’ 3” Died 02 July, 1997Jimmy studied architecture at Princeton, but his desire to act led him to the University Players where he associated with Josh Logan. He enjoyed singing, dancing, and also played the accordion and piano. The difficulty of finding work during the ‘Great Depression’ led him and his close friend, Henry Fonda, to Hollywood. This was the beginning of his career. He became a stock player for MGM but catapulted to stardom with Frank Capra films: You Can’t Take It With You, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and It’s a Wonderful Life. Jimmy was drafted into WWII as a private and rose to the rank of Colonel and flew combat missions over Europe. He continued in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and retired in 1959 as Brigadier General. Jimmy was nominated for five Academy Awards winning Best Actor for The Philadelpia Story 1940, and he received an Honorary Oscar in 1985 for his 50 years of memorable performances. Stewart married Gloria McLean, a former model, when he was 41. He adopted her two sons and later had twin daughters.
