Saturday, Jan. 5—

An experimental aircraft crashed today near Julian, and its pilot was not injured, according to Cal Fire.

Cal Fire crews were dispatched to the crash site in a rural area about 2 miles off Eagle Peak Road shortly before 1 p.m., according to Battalion Chief Nick Schuler of Cal Fire.

The cause of the crash is unknown, as was the altitude of the aircraft prior to the crash, he said.

The pilot was the only occupant of the aircraft and was not injured in the crash, Schuler said. He was taken from the crash site via San Diego County Sheriff’s Department helicopter.

Schuler said it is standard to report any incidents involving a downed aircraft to the Federal Aviation Administration. The aircraft’s tail number was not immediately available, according to Schuler.
