Coach Dan Marshall’s Bulldog girls basketball team won one game and lost three games, including a tough overtime game to San Diego High School, in the So Cal Holiday Classic. The Lady Bulldogs are now 4-6 on the season.

Thirteen was an unlucky number for the Ramona High girls as they lost 67-62 in a double overtime thriller to San Diego High School at the Dawg House.

The Lady Dawgs missed 13 free throws in the game as they went 17 for 30 from the charity stripe.

Ramona started slowly and trailed 11-2 early in the first quarter and went into the second period trailing 15-8. Then defensive coordinator Ken Scheib came up with change. Ramona is known for its pressure “man to man” defense. Scheib had the Lady Dawgs switch to a zone defense and that got Ramona back into the game.

“They were bigger than us and they were quicker than us. So we decided to try to have them make long shots. That worked until the overtime when they hit some shots that they were missing in regulation,” said Marshall.

The Bulldog girls tied the game in the second period at 15 but the Cavers re-took the lead. Ramona got its first lead in the third quarter when Hannah Farhat hit all three of her 3-point baskets to help Ramona take a 42-37 lead into the final quarter of regulation. San Diego tied the game at 49 to send it to overtime.

After one four-minute overtime period the score was tied at 57. San Diego got hot and won in the second OT.

Two Lady Bulldogs recorded double doubles. Kailey Hill led all scorers and rebounders with 21 points and 17 boards. Katherine Mauldin scored 11 and grabbed 17. Freshman Chiara Mattern had her most productive game of the year as she scored 19 points. Christina Barrameda came off the injured list and dished off a game-high seven assists and grabbed eight rebounds to go with her 2 points.

The Lady Dawgs lost to Eagle Rock High School in the opening game of the So Cal Holiday Classic 50-41.

“We let one we should have won get away. We were tied going into the final quarter and let it get away,” said Marshall.

Mattern had her most complete game of the season as she led the Lady Dawgs in scoring with 13 points to go with six rebounds, six assists and a team-high four steals. Barrameda led Ramona with nine boards and scored 8 points. Mauldin scored 11 points and grabbed eight boards. Hill scored 6 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished off six assists. Farhat scored 2 points in the game.

“Yesterday we let one get away and today we won a game nobody thought we could win. I am proud of the way we bounced back and scored an upset,” Marshall said about his team’s 69-58 win over Vista.

Barrameda hit four three-point goals and scored a season-high 24 points to go along with her nine rebounds and three assists. Mauldin recorded a double double as she scored 18 points and grabbed 11 boards. Hill also scored in double figures with 15 points and six rebounds. Lauren Werhanowicz (2) and Farhat (2) also scored. Kylee Scheib came off the injured list and led the team with four assists.

Mauldin led the Lady Dawgs in scoring with 14 points in a 69-41 loss to Torrey Pines. Hill (7), Mattern (3), Werhanowicz (3), Barrameda (9), Emily Sojourner (3) and Ashlyn Savage (2) also scored for Ramona.
