Here’s my list of News Year’s resolutions and gifts for the holidays.

Resolutions

I will never say before announcing any starting lineup, “Please hold your laughter until the entire team has been announced.” I did that once several decades ago and the coach has yet to forgive me.

I will never announce or write in an article, “Will the jerk who knows nothing about the sport or its rules please quit yelling at the officials.” Or “Will the individual who has never coached or played the game quit yelling at the players and coaches.” I have never announced that over the PA but I have less than quietly made that request to individuals at games.

I will never try to get the best of Dan Marshall with a snide remark because he always comes back with a better one.

I will try to count most of my strokes when golfing with Mike Jordan (the old one), coach Tom Jamison and coach Bill Pittsford. They just add 10 to the score I enter and usually come up short on my real score.

I will stay away from Doug Sooley and Alan Rhodes when I am taking photos at sporting events. Those guys are pros and I am not in their league. Thanks guys for providing pictures for the

during football season. You guys were on the sidelines during hot and cold weather when I was in an air conditioned and/or heated booth.

Gifts

To some of the fans who do more jeering than cheering: I want to give you a clue. Attend a game where Army, Navy or Air Force is playing and observe fans with class who support their team, win or lose, and respect the other team and coaches and officials.

To ESPN: another week in December so that every team in the nation can play in a meaningless bowl game.

To people who don’t understand geography: I want to explain to them what the word “nation” means. Ramona is a town. There is no Bulldog nation. Florida is a state. There is no Gator nation. That goes for all but

a very few colleges. The academies, Notre Dame, and the Ivies have national followings. Chino State does not.

To coaches and fans who are color blind or color deceptive or just don’t like their school’s colors: Black is not the new white. Dark gray is not black. I recently watched a football team whose official colors are red and gold. They wore all-black uniforms. Stanford (red and white) has a uniform that has black helmets and black jerseys and pants. How come nobody likes the Raiders but everybody wants to wear their colors? Schools like San Diego State and Army and others whose colors are really black should take offense. Every other group and school is taking offense to everything from mascots to cheers, so why not take offense to bogus colors?

Thanks for gifts I received: The coaches at RHS who live to coach and do not coach to make a living. The parents, relatives and fans who go well beyond the call of duty to support, transport, and feed players and donate time, energy and money so that Ramona’s athletes can compete in interscholastic athletics. You give to the entire community and to the youth and future of our country. To the student/athletes of RHS, some of whom have won team and individual championships: all of you are champions in every sense of the word.

Happy

Holidays!

Thanks!
