Ramona Community School PTSA spends $1,250 on school security

Ramona Community School has a LOCK BLOK on every door in the school, Mountain Valley Academy senior Angelica White told Ramona Unified trustees recently.

“A quick slip of the LOCK BLOK from inside the room or workroom (will) lock the doors to intruders,” she said during her student board member report.

At a cost of $1,250, the school’s Parent Teacher Student Association bought 105 to enhance school security, and they’ve been put on every door — classrooms, administration, library, technology labs, etc., she said.

“We have gone through the procedures of what to do if there is an intruder,” she said. “...Every class on campus has practiced this. Students are aware of how the LOCK BLOK works, so even young children can secure the door in an emergency.”

The purchase came after the mass killing at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut on Dec. 14, 2012, in which a 20-year-old shot 20 students and six staff members before killing himself.

Also during her report, White talked about standardized testing, the formal dance planned at Mountain Valley Ranch at the end of the school year, the Hiking Club’s plan to hike Mt. Whitney on June 6, a school fundraiser, and participation in the 24-hour Relay for Life benefiting the American Cancer Society on April 20-21.

“We are excited the playground shade structure is being installed, and the surface is being prepared for the

installation of fitness station equipment,” she said.

Federal Community Development Block Grant money is paying for the project, which Trustee Dawn Perfect worked on about five years ago, added White.

“(It took) way too long,” commented Perfect, referring to the time between receiving county approval for the project and completion.
