A Huntington Beach man was taken to an area hospital with cuts to his face after his truck veered off a curve and hit a tree on State Route 78, near Weekend Villa Road, around 4 p.m., Monday, reported California Highway Patrol.

According to CHP Officer Dan Matthews, the 35-year-old driver said he was fighting to stay awake and fell asleep as his Ford pickup truck came straight off a curve and knocked down a tree. Matthews said the tree already appeared to be dead. The CHP officer said no alcohol or reckless driving played a role in the accident.
