Crews battle brush fire in Wynola

The incident commander at the Wynola fire has lifted all evacuation orders, all residents are allowed to return to their homes, and Highway 78 has been re-opened, reports Cal Fire.

Firefighters will remain on scene of the ire all night and most of Saturday gaining full containment and control of the fire.

A motorcycle crash at a rural road crossing in Wynola sparked a fast-moving wildfire that blackened about 15 open acres Friday afternoon and prompted some evacuations but caused no structural damage.

The traffic accident occurred at Wynola and Farmer roads shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to Cal Fire.

As medics took the injured motorcyclist to a hospital, flames sparked by the crash spread rapidly up a brushy roadside slope, said Mike Mohler, a fire captain with the state agency.

Ground crews fought the blaze with help from personnel aboard two air tankers and three helicopters. Deputies, meanwhile, advised residents of about two dozen homes in the area to evacuate as a precaution.

Firefighters had the spread of the flames, which came within a few hundred feet of several residences, halted by 2:45 p.m., Mohler said.

The blaze caused no reported injuries.

Update: 3:30 p.m., Sept. 21:

State Route 78 is closed between Whispering Pines and Wynola Road is closed until further notice due to brush fire, CHP reports.

Update: 3:20 p.m., Sept. 21:

The Wynola Fire is holding at 15 acres, and the incident commander has released two of the airtankers. The other two airtankers are staged at the airbase if they are needed at the fire, reports Cal Fire. There is retardant surrounding the fire, and firefighters are working on mopping up a few small spot fires. If conditions remain the same, they will be releasing additional equipment soon, says a Cal Fire spokesperson.

Update: 2:50 p.m., Sept. 21—

The fire is no longer actively spreading and firefighters are beginning to make good progress on the incident., reports Cal Fire.

Crews are fighting a roughly 15- to 20-acre brush fire in an open area off Wynola Road, near Farmer Road, a dispatcher said Friday afternoon.

There are no reports of structural threats.

A motorcycle accident at Wynola and Farmer roads apparently started the fire, according to the California Highway Patrol website.

Wynola Road is closed between Banner Grade and Farmers Road, CHP reported just before 2 p.m.

CHP received the accident call at 1:17 p.m.
