Officials rule 1 of 2 Santa Ysabel deaths a homicide

The death of a woman whose body was found this week along with her husband’s in their Santa Ysabel home has been ruled a homicide, while his demise apparently was due to natural causes, a sheriff’s official reported.

Further details on how the retirement-age Santa Ysabel couple died are being withheld pending completion of postmortem exams and forensic tests, including ballistics, Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said. Their names have been withheld pending family notification.

Detectives are not looking for any outstanding suspects, he said.

Deputies conducting a welfare check at the request of a relative discovered the bodies of the man and woman, both believed to be in their 80s, in the couple’s Mesa Grande Road home about 9 p.m. Monday. A gun also was found in the residence, which bore no evidence of forced entry or burglary, the lieutenant said.

The woman died of a single gunshot wound, and her husband evidently had succumbed to heart failure. Each apparently died within several days of the discovery of their bodies, according to Giannantonio.

“We can’t speculate on anything beyond that at this point,” he said.
