Pixie Sulser, center, Ramona High School AVID teacher and adviser, accepts a check for $500 for the school’s AVID program from Kiwanis Club of Ramona President Walter Ainslie and Kiwanis member Ellen Deuel during the Kiwanis breakfast meeting on Saturday. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, a national effort that began in San Diego County in the 1980s. The purpose of the AVID program is to prepare traditionally underserved students for four-year college eligibility and to restructure the teaching methods of an entire school to make college preparatory curricula available to almost all students.
